Puthiya Bhagavathi Theyyam

Puthiya Bhagavathi Theyyam, a revered manifestation of the goddess Bhagavathi, has a captivating origin story that traces back to the divine realm. Legend has it that Lord Shiva resides happily in heaven with his two daughters, who were born from his third divine eye. However, a sudden and fatal disease outbreak struck their heavenly abode, leaving many in dire condition. In response, Lord Shiva made a momentous decision. He sent his daughters to Earth and commanded his courtiers to perform a sacred ritual known as “homam” to rid the land of all evils.

During this ritual, an astonishing event occurred – the goddess Bhagavathi emerged from the fiery embers. The desperate people narrated the dire situation and the purpose of eradicating diseases to the goddess. As an offering, they presented fresh hen’s blood to quench her thirst. In a miraculous turn of events, all evils and chronic diseases vanished from their destiny. It is said that she descended upon the Earth in Kolathnadu, bestowing blessings for a healthy and peaceful life. In honor of this divine manifestation, the Chieftain of Kalathnadu, Chirakkal Raja, ordered the performance of Puthiya Bhagavathi Theyyam.

Bhagavathi’s divine presence even reached the dreams of the Kolathiri King, leading to the inception of the Puthiya Bhagavathi Theyyam. This Theyyam serves as a testament to the goddess’s compassion and power in protecting her people from all diseases, making her a revered deity in the hearts of those who celebrate her.
